IFRC 13 Jan:IFRC has deployed a FACT (Field Assessment and Coordination Team) of around 10 people to Haiti for initial assessment for all major sectors. MHPSS will be covered by the Health Delegate. Tomorrow a rapid deployment hospital will go out. This includes for the first time a psychosocial support component and 2 delegates. Those of you who were present in Copenhagen may remember a 5-minute presentation that I did on this. We are very interested to share information and participate in coordinated activities, including assessments. I will relay information to and from my colleagues in the field to the best of my ability.

AMERICAN RED CROSS - Anjana and I, in addition to 17 American Red Cross volunteers trained in Psychological First Aid were activated yesterday to provide psychological support to a group of Haitians, who are American citizens that were evacuated to Puerto Rico by the Air National Guard. Sixty persons arrived in the flight including twenty children. The refugees shared stories of loss, fear and despair. One person was referred to the Government Hospital because she had developed chest pain. In addition to the disaster related distress, there were some physical issues identified such as high blood pressure, exhaustion, and dehydration.

AMERICAN RED CROSS - The Governor of Puerto Rico has advised that Puerto Rico will continue to be a port-of-entry for Haitians either in transit to the States or those that need medical assistance in the Trauma Center. The Puerto Rico Chapter of the American Red Cross has over 100 trained volunteers in Psychological First Aid and have received practical experience by participating in local disasters in the last year. The Psychosocial Support volunteers from the Chapter have been placed on alert for the next three weeks. The objective is to receive flights from Haiti and provide psychological first aid, defusing, assistance to the helpers and make referrals as needed.
